📚 In 2016, David Frohman and his firm, Peachstate Historical Consulting, Inc., created this limited edition to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. This rare opportunity arose from their acquisition of an imperfect and tightly-trimmed Second Folio that was too faulty to tempt the few of means, and too costly to suit the masses who desired it! 📚
🏛️ This limited edition was the pragmatic solution, and offered a precious opportunity for two hundred libraries, universities, theaters, and collectors to acquire an original 1632 leaf specifically bearing one of the first 1500 or so copies ever printed of an iconic Shakespearean quotation. Of those 1500 or so copies, this is one of only 450 or so surviving in the entire world, of which only 62 or so copies survive in private hands! 🏛️
✒️ Three quotation types were chosen for this edition, comprising eternal truths first authored by Shakespeare, iconic Shakespearean quotes such as "To Be or Not to Be", and quotes that, over the course of centuries, became a daily part of the English language. The leaves of this unique limited edition, bearing some of the single greatest Shakespearean quotations, remain this folio's treasured legacy. ✒️

🔍 Why Is This So Rare?
❓ What establishes this edition's quotations as being among the first 1500 or so copies ever printed and, of those, one of only 77 or so copies in private hands from a total of 450 or so surviving world-wide in any condition?
📖 Approximately 750 copies each of both the first and second folios were printed, for a combined total of 1500 or so copies of the first two folios. Of the thirty-six folio plays, eighteen also appeared as quarto editions prior to the First Folio. However, the few-known quarto copies have tiny, uncertain print runs, generally non-standardized text, and were even regarded as "Diverse" by Heminges and Condell, editors of Shakespeare's First Folio. These facts reasonably substantiate each Second Folio quotation as being among the first 1500 or so quantifiable and standardized copies of that quote ever printed!
🏦 Next, of those 1500 original total copies, the Folger Library records only 235 partial or complete First Folios, and it is thought another 215 or so partial or complete Second Folios survive. The surviving quote total of the combined First and Second Folio printings is thus only 450 or so copies worldwide, with imperfect copies lacking the specific quote offered here even further lowering this total estimate.
🔢 Of those 450 combined First and Second Folio copies, the recent "West First Folio Census" estimates only 30 or so privately-held copies of the First Folio. And, of the Second Folio, it is believed that most are also publicly-held, with the Folger Library alone owning 58 Second Folios. Another 110 or so reside in other institutional hands, leaving perhaps 47 or so whole or fragmentary quote-bearing Second Folios in private hands.
🎉 Finally, combining those privately-held 47 Second Folio copies with the 30 or so privately-held First Folio copies, we arrive at an astonishingly small total number of only some 77 or so privately-held copies worldwide of each iconic Shakespearean quote in this edition! 🎉

🗓️ An important historical distinction also exists between leaves originating from the first two folio editions of 1623 and 1632, and leaves from the later folio editions of 1663 and 1685. Only during the folio printings of 1623 and 1632 were individuals still alive who had personally known Shakespeare.
🖨️ As such, associates of Shakespeare could have literally observed the printing of the sheet bearing this very leaf in Thomas Cotes' print shop in London.
