⚙️ ONE-THIRD PAGE — "BORING FOR FOUNDATIONS FOR THE NEW YORK AND BROOKLYN SUSPENSION BRIDGE"
A one-third page illustration of the very first stage of Brooklyn Bridge construction — the boring of test shafts to determine the geological conditions for the bridge's foundations. This preliminary work, conducted in 1867, preceded the official groundbreaking that same year and the long construction process that would culminate in the bridge's opening on May 24, 1883. A significant and very early primary document of one of the greatest engineering achievements in American history — the Brooklyn Bridge in its most embryonic stage, when it existed only as test borings in the bedrock of the East River bottom. A notable find for Brooklyn Bridge collectors.

A full-page article with nine illustrations of the Adirondack Mountains — one of the great wilderness landscapes of the American Northeast, at the very height of its fame as a destination for sportsmen, artists, and summer vacationers. The 1840s and 1850s had seen the Adirondacks celebrated by the Hudson River School painters; by 1867 they were firmly established as a premier American wilderness experience. William James Murray's influential book "Adventures in the Wilderness, or Camp-Life in the Adirondacks" would appear just two years later in 1869, cementing their national reputation. A beautiful and significant piece of American wilderness and landscape history.
⚓ FULL PAGE — "SAILORS' SNUG HARBOR, STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK" — NINE SCENES
Nine scenes of the Sailors' Snug Harbor on Staten Island — the magnificent Greek Revival retirement home for aged and disabled merchant sailors, founded in 1831 and one of the finest institutional complexes in New York. The Snug Harbor, built with funds from the estate of Robert Randall, featured a grand colonnaded main building and extensive grounds on the north shore of Staten Island, housing hundreds of retired seamen in their final years. A significant piece of New York maritime history and American philanthropic architecture.
