Four illustrations documenting life at Fort Dodge, Kansas during the Indian Wars of 1867 — including an Indian council, the sutler's store, and the fort's interior. Fort Dodge sat on the Santa Fe Trail in southwestern Kansas, one of the most contested frontiers in America in 1867 as Cheyenne Dog Soldiers resisted the encroachment of the railroad and settlers into their prime buffalo hunting grounds. The Indian council scene — showing Native leaders meeting with U.S. military and government representatives — is a primary document of the diplomatic and military negotiations that were simultaneously happening alongside the violence of the Hancock Expedition. Fort Dodge would become the staging point for Custer's famous winter campaign of 1868 that resulted in the Battle of the Washita. A significant piece of Indian Wars history and Kansas frontier history.
