A primary document of Black agricultural labor in the post-emancipation South, published at the height of Congressional Reconstruction debates.\n\n━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━\n✊ BLACK LABOR ON THE COTTON PLANTATION\n━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━\n\n🌿 DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD — \"SCENES ON A COTTON PLANTATION\" — TWELVE PRINTS\nA significant and comprehensive double-page centerfold of twelve scenes depicting Black workers at various stages of cotton cultivation — picking, hoeing, working the cotton gin, and other plantation tasks. Published in February 1867, this centerfold documents the cotton plantation economy of the post-emancipation South at one of its most contested moments: the first Reconstruction Act had not yet passed (it would come in March 1867), and Black workers across the South were still laboring under the exploitative sharecropping and contract labor systems that had emerged to replace slavery while preserving much of its economic structure. The twelve scenes — from field work to gin house — form a comprehensive visual documentary of Black agricultural labor that is both a primary document of Southern economic history and a piece of Black Americana of the highest historical significance. The cotton gin scenes are particularly rare. A significant, displayable, and very collectible piece of African American history and Southern Reconstruction history.\n\n━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━\n🌍 THE WAR IN CRETE\n━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━\n\n⚔️ ILLUSTRATIONS \u0026amp; MAP — \"THE WAR IN CRETE\" — INCLUDING MAP OF THE ISLAND, \"A GREEK PRIEST,\" AND \"VIEW OF CANEA, THE PRINCIPAL PORT OF CRETE\"\nA significant multi-piece documentary of the Cretan revolt of 1866-69 — the uprising of the Greek Christian population of Crete against Ottoman rule, which had been ongoing since August 1866 and was generating enormous sympathy across Europe and America. The illustrations include a map of Crete, a portrait of a Greek Orthodox priest, and a view of Canea (Chania) — the principal Ottoman port and administrative center of the island. The Cretan revolt prefigured the broader Eastern Question that would culminate in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 and the eventual union of Crete with Greece in 1913. A significant piece of Victorian Greek and Ottoman history.\n\n━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━\n🖼️ INSIDE THE ISSUE\n━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━\n\n🏒 TWO FRONT PAGE VIEWS — \"ST. JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK, SKATING RINK\"\nTwo front-page views of the St. John, New Brunswick skating rink — a significant piece of Canadian winter leisure and architectural history, capturing the indoor skating rink culture that was sweeping North America in the 1860s.\n\n🔥 ILLUSTRATION — \"BURNING OF THE HYATT HOUSE, JANESVILLE, WISCONSIN\"\nAn illustration of the dramatic fire that destroyed the Hyatt House hotel in Janesville, Wisconsin — a vivid piece of Midwest Victorian disaster history.\n\n🔥 ILLUSTRATION — \"FIRE IN ALBANY\"\nAn illustration of a fire in Albany, New York — a significant piece of New York State fire and urban history.\n\n❄️ ILLUSTRATION — \"THE GREAT SNOW STORM\"\nAn illustration of the great snowstorm — a vivid piece of Victorian American winter weather history, capturing one of the severe storms that regularly paralyzed the Eastern Seaboard.\n\n━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━\n📋 CONDITION\n━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━\n\nI photograph every page of every issue so you can inspect the condition closely before purchasing.
