Published in February 1867, this centerfold documents the cotton plantation economy of the post-emancipation South at one of its most contested moments: the first Reconstruction Act had not yet passed (it would come in March 1867), and Black workers across the South were still laboring under the exploitative sharecropping and contract labor systems that had emerged to replace slavery while preserving much of its economic structure. The twelve scenes โ€” from field work to gin house โ€” form a comprehensive visual documentary of Black agricultural labor that is both a primary document of Southern economic history and a piece of Black Americana of the highest historical significance. The cotton gin scenes are particularly rare.
