Kidder and ten enlisted men were dispatched from Fort Sedgwick, Colorado, to carry dispatches from General Sherman to Custer โ€” but Kidder arrived at Custer's abandoned campsite and took the wrong trail. Discovered by Oglala Lakota warriors allied with Cheyenne Dog Soldiers, the party was attacked, overwhelmed, killed, scalped, and mutilated, their bodies filled with arrows. On July 12, Custer's advance scouts โ€” following a trail of dead horses โ€” found the decomposed and barely recognizable bodies of Kidder and his men in a ravine in Sherman County, Kansas.
