Greeley, who had run the Tribune since 1841 and whose weekly edition was said to be "second only to the Bible in its influence on the Midwest," was one of the most recognizable and polarizing public figures in America in September 1867. Just four months earlier, his signing of Jefferson Davis's bail bond had sparked furious public backlash; his advocacy for amnesty for the South and Black suffrage simultaneously put him at odds with much of both camps. He would run for president against Grant in 1872 and die just weeks after his crushing defeat. This front-page illustration captures him at the height of his public prominence and controversy. German immigrants had transformed American musical culture in the mid-19th century, and the Sangerfests, competitive choral gatherings drawing hundreds of singers and thousands of spectators, were among the most vibrant expressions of German-American community life.
