ποΈ FULL FRONT PAGE β "HORACE GREELEY DELIVERING THE OPENING ORATION" OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE
A full front-page illustration of Horace Greeley β the founder and editor of the New-York Tribune, the most widely circulated newspaper in America β delivering the opening oration of the American Institute, the prominent New York organization promoting American industry and agriculture. Greeley, who had run the Tribune since 1841 and whose weekly edition was said to be "second only to the Bible in its influence on the Midwest," was one of the most recognizable and polarizing public figures in America in September 1867. Just four months earlier, his signing of Jefferson Davis's bail bond had sparked furious public backlash; his advocacy for amnesty for the South and Black suffrage simultaneously put him at odds with much of both camps. He would run for president against Grant in 1872 and die just weeks after his crushing defeat. This front-page illustration captures him at the height of his public prominence and controversy. A significant piece of American journalistic and political history.

π HALF PAGE β "REGISTRATION AT THE SOUTH β SCENE AT ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA"
A half-page illustration of voter registration in Asheville, North Carolina β published during the opening phase of Congressional Reconstruction, when the Military Reconstruction Act of 1867 required Southern states to register Black voters as a condition of readmission to the Union. The scene at Asheville captures a pivotal and contested moment: Black men exercising their newly established right to register to vote, under the protection of federal authority, in a former Confederate state still adjusting to the new political order. A significant primary document of Black political participation in the Reconstruction South.

πΎ FULL PAGE β "HOP PICKING β A WESTERN NEW YORK SEPTEMBER SCENE"
A full-page illustration of hop picking in western New York β a significant and evocative piece of New York agricultural history. Western New York was the nation's premier hop-growing region in the 19th century, with Otsego and Madison Counties supplying much of America's brewing industry. The seasonal hop harvest, which drew large numbers of temporary workers from cities and rural areas alike, was one of the great social and economic events of the New York rural calendar. A wonderful and very frameable piece of American agricultural and seasonal life.
π΅ ONE-THIRD PAGE β "THE SANGERFEST AT INDIANAPOLIS"
A one-third page illustration of the Sangerfest (Singers' Festival) at Indianapolis β the great tradition of German-American choral singing that had become a significant cultural institution across the Midwest. German immigrants had transformed American musical culture in the mid-19th century, and the Sangerfests, competitive choral gatherings drawing hundreds of singers and thousands of spectators, were among the most vibrant expressions of German-American community life. A significant piece of German-American and Indianapolis cultural history.
