The Crescent City of 1867 was one of the most complex and culturally rich cities in America — a port metropolis of French, Spanish, Creole, African American, and American cultures layered over centuries, home to the largest free Black community in the antebellum South, and in March 1867 at the very center of the Congressional Reconstruction battle. Just seven months earlier, on July 30, 1866, the New Orleans Massacre had killed at least 34 Black freedmen and 3 white Radical Republicans when a peaceful convention was attacked by Confederate veterans and police — an event that had galvanized Northern opinion and helped push Congress toward the Radical Reconstruction Acts being debated at exactly the moment this centerfold was published. The seven scenes — including the city overview, the levee, street life, and the surrounding bayous and gardens — form a comprehensive visual portrait of one of America's greatest and most storied cities at a pivotal moment in its Reconstruction-era history.
