1869 Turf Field and Farm β Baseball Convention, English Derby, Chess, Horse Racing, Dec 17
π ABOUT THIS PIECE OF HISTORY π
This December 17, 1869 issue of The Turf, Field and Farm β Volume IX, Number 25 β is one of the richest single issues of this scarce Gilded Age sporting weekly. Covering baseball, horse racing, chess, fox hunting, field sports, farming, and the glittering social world of New York theater and dining, it is a complete portrait of American sporting and cultural life at the dawn of the 1870s. For collectors of early baseball history, thoroughbred racing, Victorian chess ephemera, and 19th-century Americana, this issue rewards on every page.
βΎ BASEBALL β NATIONAL BASE BALL CONVENTION, BOSTON
A vivid firsthand account of the National Base Ball Convention held in Boston, where delegates from the Lowell and Harvard Clubs gathered at the Adams House before attending a performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at Selwyn's Theatre. About sixty guests β club members, honored guests, and members of the press β then sat down to an elegant repast at the Parker House, hosted by Mayor Shurtleff. The full bill of fare is printed in detail, from oysters on the shell through mock turtle soup, escalloped oysters, boned turkey in jelly, mongrel ducks, prairie chicken, wood ducks, soufflΓ©s Γ la Vanilla, Charlotte Russe, and Roman Punch β a rare and intimate window into the social world surrounding early organized baseball.
π THE ENGLISH DERBY β "AN INCIDENT OF THE BLUE RIBBON DAY"
The front page lead feature is an extended narrative account of the English Derby β the Blue Ribbon of the turf β told through the eyes of an American observer traveling with friends Bates and Laird, following thoroughbred horses down to Epsom to see the great race run.
π¦ FOX HUNTING & FIELD SPORTS
Fox Hunting in Wisconsin β a gripping account of a man near La Crosse tracking a fox into a hollow log, putting on heavy mittens to prevent a bite, only for the log to roll down a hill; a lynx killed by boys in Dayton, Wisconsin using a shotgun
