A full-page Nast cartoon showing the Republican elephant wounded and in bandages — a pointed commentary on the pyrrhic nature of the Republican Party's disputed electoral "victory" in the Hayes-Tilden contest. The Compromise of 1877 had handed Hayes the presidency, but at the cost of abandoning Reconstruction and Black civil rights in the South. Nast, who had championed the Republican Party and Black rights throughout his career, here depicts the GOP's victory as self-defeating. The title is drawn from the ancient saying attributed to King Pyrrhus of Epirus — making this one of Nast's most literary and historically resonant cartoons. A highly collectible piece.
