The showpiece of the issue — a great double-page centerfold depicting the thrilling and dangerous practice of shooting a logging flume in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Flumes were V-shaped wooden water channels built along mountain slopes to carry freshly cut timber down to the valleys — sometimes running for miles and dropping thousands of feet in elevation. Riding a flume was a notorious Gilded Age dare, and the flumes of the Sierra Nevada were among the engineering marvels of the American West. This sweeping panoramic centerfold captures both the breathtaking mountain scenery and the white-knuckle excitement of the descent. A vivid and very frameable piece of Western Americana.
