Casey — the celebrated officer who organized Cheyenne scouts at Fort Keogh and was shot and killed on January 7, 1891, while on a peace mission near Pine Ridge, just 24 days before this issue. Casey was shot in the head by Plenty Horses — a 22-year-old Brulé Sioux who had graduated from the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. The killing was a tragedy on multiple levels: Casey was known for his respect for Native Americans, and Plenty Horses later explained he had killed Casey to prove to his people that his Carlisle education had not made him a white man. The case became a national sensation and Plenty Horses was ultimately acquitted, the court ruling that as a state of war existed at Pine Ridge, killing an enemy officer was not murder. Remington had previously written a complimentary article about Casey for Harper's Weekly. The two prints showing Lakota riders — likely depicting the Sioux scouts Casey encountered on his final mission — are a rare and humanizing piece of Native American portraiture from the Wounded Knee era.
