Five Frederic Remington illustrations documenting the Wounded Knee Massacre and the Pine Ridge campaign — published just 26 days after the events they depict. On December 29, 1890, the 7th Cavalry surrounded a band of Lakota Sioux led by Chief Big Foot near Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. During the disarmament of the band, a shot was fired — by whom remains disputed — and the soldiers opened fire with rifles and Hotchkiss mountain guns, killing between 250 and 300 Lakota men, women, and children, and 25 soldiers in the crossfire. It was the last major armed confrontation of the Indian Wars and a defining tragedy of American history.
Remington had traveled to Pine Ridge as a Harper's Weekly correspondent during the Ghost Dance crisis of late 1890, embedded with the Army as he had been throughout his career. His five illustrations for this issue represent first-hand reportage from the field:

A primary visual document of the most significant event in late 19th-century Native American history, rendered by an eyewitness illustrator.
🥁 **PORTRAIT OF A MEDICINE MAN** — One of Remington's three additional prints, including a portrait of a Ghost Dance medicine man — capturing a face of the spiritual movement that the Army had been sent to suppress and that Wounded Knee effectively ended. The Ghost Dance religion, founded by the Paiute prophet Wovoka, had promised the return of the buffalo and the ancestors; Wounded Knee was its brutal conclusion.
