Seattle had become the capital of Washington Territory in 1853 and grown steadily as a timber and shipping port, but its true transformation came in two great upheavals: Washington achieved statehood on November 11, 1889, and the Great Seattle Fire of June 6, 1889 — occurring on the exact same day two years before this issue — destroyed 25 city blocks of downtown Seattle. The city's response was extraordinary: rather than rebuilding on the same level, Seattle raised the entire downtown by one to two stories, creating the famous Seattle Underground beneath the new streets. By June 1891, Seattle was a boom city rising from its own ashes, its streets newly grade-raised, its brick and stone buildings replacing the wooden ones that had burned, its harbor busy with Puget Sound lumber trade and the beginnings of what would become one of the great Pacific ports of North America. These seven scenes — capturing the harbor, the streets, the surrounding Sound, and the dramatic geography of Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains beyond — are a primary document of Seattle at this pivotal moment.
