Combined with closing scenes at Santiago, Manila and the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and a navy band playing the Star-Spangled Banner, this is one of the most visually and historically important Spanish-American War issues in the Harper's Weekly run. βοΈ DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD β "THE STORMING OF SAN JUAN β THE HEAD OF THE CHARGE β SANTIAGO DE CUBA, JULY 1" β BY FREDERIC REMINGTON
The showpiece of the issue and one of the most significant illustrations in the entire 1898 Harper's Weekly run β a double-page centerfold by Frederic Remington depicting the charge up San Juan Heights on July 1, 1898, the most celebrated land battle of the Spanish-American War. Remington was America's most famous artist of military and Western subjects, and Harper's Weekly had sent him to Cuba as a war correspondent-illustrator to cover the conflict firsthand. He witnessed and sketched the Cuban campaign from the beaches of Siboney to the slopes of San Juan Hill, producing illustrations that shaped American visual memory of the war in the same way his earlier work had defined the American West. This double-page centerfold β captioned "The Storming of San Juan β The Head of the Charge β Santiago de Cuba, July 1" β depicts the Rough Riders and Buffalo Soldiers ascending the heights under fire, the moment that made Theodore Roosevelt a national hero and launched him toward the White House. Remington's San Juan illustrations are sold regularly at major auction houses including Sotheby's and Christie's; this original Harper's Weekly centerfold is the primary published source of that iconic image. An original print β not a reproduction β by one of the most collected American illustrators and painters of the 19th century.
