A full page of three photographs capturing Hawaii's reaction to the news of its annexation as a United States Territory — the formal annexation ceremony having taken place at Iolani Palace in Honolulu on August 12, 1898, just one day before this issue's publication date. The American flag was raised over the palace as the Hawaiian national anthem was played for the last time and replaced by the Star-Spangled Banner. Queen Liliuokalani had been overthrown in 1893; for five years Hawaii had existed as an independent republic; now it became American territory, its fate sealed by the strategic importance of Pearl Harbor during the Spanish-American War. Hawaii would not become a state until 1959. These photographs — published on the day after the ceremony — are as close to real-time primary documentation as the era's publishing technology allowed.
