The battle destroyed the entire Spanish Pacific fleet in six hours without a single American killed. Gridley died June 5, 1898, en route home to the United States, aboard the SS Coptic in Kobe, Japan. His ashes were returned to Erie, Pennsylvania, where four Navy guns from the Spanish Arsenal at Cavite were placed on his grave.
