The showpiece of the issue β six illustrations documenting life aboard the USS Franklin, the flagship of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, in New York Harbor on June 29, 1867. Farragut was the most celebrated naval officer of the Civil War β the hero of the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864, immortalized by his order "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" β and the first officer in American history to hold the rank of Vice Admiral and, in 1866, Admiral. In 1867, Farragut was commanding the European Squadron as its first admiral, representing the reunited United States to the great powers of Europe. This centerfold, documenting his flagship on the eve of her departure, captures Farragut at the height of his fame and glory. A significant and very frameable piece of American Civil War naval history.

π QUARTER-PAGE PORTRAIT β "THE LATE MAXIMILIAN I., EMPEROR OF MEXICO"
A portrait of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria β installed as Emperor of Mexico by Napoleon III in 1864 and executed by firing squad on June 19, 1867, just one month before this issue, at the Cerro de las Campanas in QuerΓ©taro, Mexico. Despite pleas for clemency from the crowned heads of Europe, President JuΓ‘rez refused to spare him, and Maximilian was shot alongside his generals MiramΓ³n and MejΓa. His last words were "I forgive everyone, and I ask everyone to forgive me." Published one month after his execution, this portrait is a primary document of one of the most dramatic events in 19th-century Latin American history.

A portrait of Benito JuΓ‘rez β the Zapotec-born Mexican lawyer and statesman who ordered Maximilian's execution and became one of the greatest heroes of Mexican national identity. JuΓ‘rez had led the constitutional government in exile throughout the French intervention, and his triumph over both the French Empire and the Habsburg monarchy represented the vindication of Mexican republican sovereignty.
