⚾ NEARLY HALF PAGE — "THE CHAMPION NINE OF THE UNION BASE-BALL CLUB OF MORRISANIA, NEW YORK" — WITH RELATED ARTICLE "THE BASE-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP"
The most significant illustration in the issue — a nearly half-page team portrait of the nine members of the Union Base-Ball Club of Morrisania, shown in uniform, two members holding bats and another holding what appears to be a catcher's mask. The Unions of Morrisania — a club based in a village that is now the South Bronx — had won the 1867 baseball championship just sixteen days before this issue went to press, defeating the Brooklyn Atlantics on October 10, 1867, in a dramatic conclusion to one of the most contested championship races of the amateur era. Their roster included future major leaguers Dave Birdsall (catcher), Charlie Pabor (pitcher), and Tommy Beals (outfielder). The championship article on the facing page documents one of the most significant and controversial pennant races of the pre-professional era, including disputed challenges involving the powerful Philadelphia Athletics. Published with an accompanying article on the championship, this is one of the earliest known full team portraits of a baseball champion in the American illustrated press — a significant and highly collectible piece of 19th-century baseball history. An essential addition to any collection of pre-professional era baseball ephemera.
