🗳️ THOMAS NAST: "WE ACCEPT THE SITUATION" — BLACK UNION SOLDIER VOTES
A Thomas Nast political cartoon held by the Library of Congress (Call Number: Illus. in AP2.H32 1867, Harper's Weekly v. 11, no. 537, p. 240) and documented by the House Divided Project at Dickinson College — depicting a Black Union soldier proudly holding a slip of paper labeled "A vote" while a disgruntled former Confederate soldier, frowning with hands in his pockets, stands before a broadsheet of the Military Bill with a torn slip labeled "No vote" at his feet. Published April 13, 1867 — just six weeks after the Military Reconstruction Act mandated Black male suffrage in the former Confederate states — this cartoon distills the entire constitutional confrontation of Reconstruction into two figures. The Black veteran who bled for the Union now holds the ballot that the Confederacy fought to prevent; the defeated rebel who lost the war now loses the vote as well. The cartoon is used today in AP U.S. History and college courses as a primary document of Reconstruction-era political thought, with curriculum materials produced by Teachers Pay Teachers and multiple university programs.
