A historically exceptional issue β Thomas Nast's "We Accept the Situation," held by the Library of Congress, showing a Black Union soldier holding his ballot as a disgruntled ex-Confederate stands beside a torn "No vote" slip; the Peabody Education Fund trustees including Grant and Farragut; the Fenian uprising in Ireland; and African fashions. A primary document of the Reconstruction era's central conflict over Black voting rights, confirmed by the Library of Congress.

π³οΈ THOMAS NAST: "WE ACCEPT THE SITUATION" β BLACK UNION SOLDIER VOTES
A Thomas Nast political cartoon held by the Library of Congress (Call Number: Illus. in AP2.H32 1867, Harper's Weekly v. 11, no. 537, p. 240) and documented by the House Divided Project at Dickinson College β depicting a Black Union soldier proudly holding a slip of paper labeled "A vote" while a disgruntled former Confederate soldier, frowning with hands in his pockets, stands before a broadsheet of the Military Bill with a torn slip labeled "No vote" at his feet. Published April 13, 1867 β just six weeks after the Military Reconstruction Act mandated Black male suffrage in the former Confederate states β this cartoon distills the entire constitutional confrontation of Reconstruction into two figures. The Black veteran who bled for the Union now holds the ballot that the Confederacy fought to prevent; the defeated rebel who lost the war now loses the vote as well. The cartoon is used today in AP U.S. History and college courses as a primary document of Reconstruction-era political thought, with curriculum materials produced by Teachers Pay Teachers and multiple university programs. A significant and historically documented piece of Thomas Nast's Reconstruction work, Black American history, and civil rights history β held in the Library of Congress collection.

Grant β just months from the Republican presidential nomination β and Admiral David Farragut, hero of Mobile Bay and the first Admiral in U.S. history. The Peabody Education Fund became one of the most significant educational philanthropies of the 19th century, establishing teacher training institutions and schools across the South and directly influencing what would become the modern Southern public school system. A significant piece of American educational history, Reconstruction philanthropy, and the careers of two Civil War heroes.
