The Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry regiments, organized in 1866 as the first permanent peacetime Black regiments in the U.S. Army, were deployed on the southern Plains in 1867 to protect settlers, railroad workers, and mail routes. Published just one year after their organization, this is an extremely early primary document of Buffalo Soldier service in the Indian Wars — among the first illustrations of Black soldiers in combat in the post-Civil War American West. A significant piece of railroad history and Indian Wars history. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🪖 U.S. MARINES IN FORMOSA ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⚓ ILLUSTRATION — "ATTACK OF UNITED STATES MARINES AND SAILORS ON THE PIRATES ON THE ISLAND OF FORMOSA" A historically significant illustration of the Formosa Expedition of June 13, 1867 — one of the most remarkable and least-known U.S. military operations of the 19th century. The American merchant bark Rover had wrecked off the southern tip of Formosa (Taiwan) in March 1867, and its crew was killed by Paiwan indigenous warriors. In retaliation, Rear Admiral Henry Bell dispatched 181 Marines and sailors from USS Hartford — Farragut's own flagship from the Battle of Mobile Bay — and the sloop USS Wyoming. The landing force pushed into the jungle, but the Paiwan fought a masterful guerrilla defense from concealed positions on the ridge lines. Lieutenant Commander Alexander MacKenzie was killed; the Americans retreated in defeat. Harper's Weekly called the Paiwan "pirates" — the Victorian framing — but the expedition was an acknowledged American failure. The Naval History and Heritage Command and the Formosafiles podcast both cite this exact Harper's Weekly illustration from this issue.
