One of the most varied and collectible issues of the autumn 1867 run. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📚 CHARLES DICKENS — PUBLISHED DURING HIS FINAL AMERICAN TOUR ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✍️ PORTRAIT — "CHARLES DICKENS" A portrait of Charles Dickens — published in the very week of his triumphant return to America for his second and final reading tour. Dickens had arrived in Boston on November 19, 1867 — just eleven days before this issue — aboard the Cunard steamship Cuba. His first reading at Boston's Tremont Temple was scheduled for December 2, and the entire country was in a state of literary excitement. Longfellow, Emerson, and the cream of American literary society had turned out to welcome him. Over the next six months he would give readings in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, and other cities, earning $140,000 and electrifying audiences at every stop. He returned to England in April 1868 and died on June 9, 1870 — just two and a half years after this portrait appeared. This is one of the last portraits of Dickens published during his lifetime in the American press, at the moment of his greatest triumph in the country he had once criticized so harshly in American Notes.
