Published just months after the execution of Emperor Maximilian and the restoration of Juárez's republican government, this view of Mexico City captures the capital at the beginning of its post-imperial era. A significant piece of Mexican history and Latin American architectural history. 🏔️ FULL PAGE — "THE MONT CENIS RAILROAD — ALONG THE ROUTE OF THE ALPS" A full-page illustration of the extraordinary Mont Cenis Railway — the Fell-system mountain railway that was the first railroad ever to cross the Alps, constructed over the Mont Cenis Pass between France and Italy while the great Fréjus Tunnel beneath was being excavated. Designed by British engineer John Barraclough Fell using his innovative three-rail center-rail system for traction on steep gradients, the last rail of the line was laid on August 15, 1867 — just weeks before this October 12 issue. The railway would officially open in June 1868 and operate until 1871, when the Fréjus Tunnel rendered it obsolete. At 77 kilometers long and reaching a summit of 7,490 feet, it was a staggering feat of Victorian engineering, used primarily to carry British mail to India along the "All-Red Route."
