π ONE-THIRD PAGE β "THE OVERLAND PONY EXPRESS" β FROM A PAINTING BY GEORGE M. OTTINGER
A one-third page illustration of the Overland Pony Express β from a painting by artist George M. Ottinger β showing a Pony Express rider at full gallop, passing telegraph workers near Chimney Rock on the North Platte River in Nebraska. This specific illustration is cited by Encyclopaedia Britannica in its article on the Pony Express, confirming it as "from a painting by George M. Ottinger for Harper's Weekly magazine, November 2, 1867." The original Pony Express, operated by the Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company, had run from April 3, 1860 to October 26, 1861 β closing just two days after the transcontinental telegraph reached Salt Lake City. By 1867 Wells Fargo, which had acquired the Pony Express assets in 1866, continued to use the Pony Express brand for its overland express service. The accompanying article on the Pony Express "of recent years" is a nostalgic retrospective on one of the most celebrated chapters in American frontier history, published just six years after the original service ended. A primary document of Pony Express history confirmed by Encyclopaedia Britannica β a significant and very collectible piece of Western Americana.
ποΈ SMALL ILLUSTRATION β "PONY EXPRESS STATION IN NEBRASKA"
A small illustration of a Pony Express relay station in Nebraska β one of the nearly 200 stations along the route, where riders changed horses and handed off the mail in under two minutes. A rare documentary glimpse of the physical infrastructure of the legendary service.
