One of the most varied and historically rich issues in the 1867 run โ the first public demonstration of a pneumatic railway (the 19th-century ancestor of the Hyperloop), Garibaldi, General Sheridan's triumphant reception in Union Square, a drove of Texas cattle, railroad surveying in Nicaragua, the British Abyssinian Expedition mustering in the Mersey, King Theodore's Ethiopian fortress, and much more. A remarkable cross-section of Victorian America and the wider world.

๐ THE PNEUMATIC RAILWAY โ ANCESTOR OF THE HYPERLOOP
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
๐ ONE-THIRD PAGE โ "MODEL OF THE PNEUMATIC RAILWAY ON EXHIBITION AT THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE, NEW YORK"
A one-third page illustration of Alfred Ely Beach's pneumatic railway model โ the exact exhibit that launched one of the most extraordinary episodes in the history of New York City transportation. Beach, the editor of Scientific American and son of the owner of the New York Sun, installed a plywood tube six feet in diameter and 107 feet long in the 14th Street Armory for the American Institute Fair of 1867. Powered by a ten-foot steam fan, the car โ carrying up to twelve passengers โ was blown from one end to the other and then drawn back by reversing the fan. Over 75,000 visitors took a ride during the fair. The New York Times called it "the most novel and attractive feature of the exhibition." This demonstration, cited directly in Wikipedia's article on Beach Pneumatic Transit as occurring at the 1867 American Institute Fair, inspired Beach to secretly build a full-scale pneumatic subway under Broadway in 1869-70, spending $350,000 of his own money in 58 nights of clandestine tunneling to create a 300-foot demonstration line โ America's first subway. The illustration in this issue โ from Harper's Weekly, October 19, 1867, Volume 11, No. 564 โ is explicitly cited by the Discovering NYC historical archive as documenting this demonstration. It is a primary document of both the history of New York City transit and the Victorian engineering imagination that gave rise to the modern Hyperloop concept.
