A full-page Thomas Nast political cartoon targeting New York City's corrupt government under the influence of Tammany Hall — captioned "A Chance to Steal Without the Risk of the Penitentiary." Published in February 1867 — four years before Nast's legendary and devastating 1871 campaign that brought down Boss Tweed — this early Tammany cartoon is a primary document of Nast's long anti-corruption crusade. The cartoon was sold at auction by Artemis Fine Arts in 2021 and is cited in its catalog as page 88 of the February 9, 1867 issue. Nast's attacks on Tammany corruption "had appeared occasionally since 1867," according to Wikipedia's Thomas Nast article — and this is one of those early salvos. A quarter-page portrait of Nathaniel Parker Willis — who had died just three weeks earlier, on January 20, 1867, at his Hudson River estate Idlewild. Willis was the highest-paid magazine writer of his day and the founder of the Home Journal (now Town & Country magazine). His pallbearers at his January 24 funeral included Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russell Lowell, and Samuel Gridley Howe. He had worked alongside Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and for a time employed Harriet Jacobs, who composed Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl while working in his household. A significant piece of American literary and journalistic history.
