π FULL PAGE β "A PARISIAN BALL β DANCING AT THE MABILLE, PARIS" β BY WINSLOW HOMER
A full-page wood engraving by Winslow Homer depicting the famous Bal Mabille β the legendary open-air dance pavilion in Paris that was the social center of Second Empire Parisian nightlife, renowned for its gaslit trees, dazzling illuminations, and fashionable dancers. Homer had recently returned from Paris, where he had exhibited his paintings and immersed himself in Parisian culture, and these two ballroom prints represent his direct response to that experience. This specific work is held in the collections of: the Smithsonian American Art Museum (The Ray Austrian Collection), the Art Institute of Chicago (Gift of Arthur and Hilda Wenig, 2001.813), the Delaware Art Museum (Gift of Helen Farr Sloan, 1988-46), the Portland Museum of Art, and the New York Public Library Jerome Robbins Dance Division. An original Harper's Weekly print β not a reproduction β of a work by one of the greatest American painters of the 19th century.
π FULL PAGE β "A PARISIAN BALL β DANCING AT THE CASINO" β BY WINSLOW HOMER
A second full-page wood engraving by Winslow Homer β a companion piece to the Mabille print β depicting dancing at a Parisian casino ballroom. This work is held in the collections of the Portland Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and Wikimedia Commons. Two Winslow Homer prints in one issue is extraordinarily rare β together they make this one of the most collectible Homer issues in the entire Harper's Weekly run. An original print of a museum-held work.

π HALLOWEEN

π FRONT PAGE β "THE PUMPKIN EFFIGY" β HALLOWEEN JACK-O-LANTERN
A front-page illustration of a carved pumpkin jack-o-lantern β a rare and sought-after piece of Halloween ephemera in the Harper's Weekly run. Victorian Halloween-related illustrations are extraordinarily scarce in American illustrated newspapers of the 1860s, making this front-page jack-o-lantern a genuinely unusual find. The jack-o-lantern tradition, brought to America by Irish immigrants, was still new and regional in 1867 β one of the earliest appearances of the carved pumpkin in American illustrated media.
