A three-quarter page illustration of Sheridan's Ride — commemorating General Philip Sheridan's legendary twenty-mile gallop on October 19, 1864, to rally his Union troops at the Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, turning a Confederate surprise attack and Union rout into a decisive Union victory that helped secure President Lincoln's reelection. The ride was immortalized in Thomas Buchanan Read's famous 1864 poem — published on election day in the New York Tribune, performed to cheering crowds in theaters and army camps, and called by some historians a factor in Lincoln's reelection margin. Grant purchased Read's companion painting, which today hangs in the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. A significant piece of Civil War memory and American patriotic iconography.
