The most significant illustration in the issue β and one of the most historically important political cartoons ever published. This full-page Thomas Nast cartoon, titled "The Third Term Panic," contains the very first appearance of the Republican elephant in American political art. Nast introduced the elephant as the symbol of the Republican Party in this single image, and it has remained the party's symbol ever since β making this a 151-year-old document of living American political iconography. Thomas Nast also created the Democratic donkey and the modern image of Santa Claus, making him the most consequential illustrator in American popular culture history.
