By 1877 the southern herd had already been effectively destroyed and the northern herd was under severe pressure. A significant piece of Western Americana and American environmental history.

A quarter-page portrait of General Nelson Miles — the aggressive young officer then leading winter campaigns against Native American tribes on the northern Plains, fresh from his role in the Great Sioux War following the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Miles would go on to capture Geronimo and become the Army's Commanding General.
