ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
β FULL PAGE β "THE JOHN BROWN MONUMENT, OSAWATOMIE, KANSAS"
A full-page illustration of the John Brown Monument at Osawatomie, Kansas β the site of the Battle of Osawatomie on August 30, 1856, where Brown and a small band of Free-State fighters skirmished with pro-slavery forces, an early episode in the "Bleeding Kansas" crisis that prefigured the Civil War. John Brown went on to lead the 1859 Harpers Ferry raid and was executed for treason, but his memory had been thoroughly rehabilitated in the North by 1877 β the marching song "John Brown's Body" had given way to "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," and monuments were beginning to honor him. A significant piece of abolitionist history, Civil War memory, and Kansas history.

The visual showpiece of the issue β a double-page centerfold of the British and American teams competing in the International Rifle Match at Creedmoor. The Creedmoor matches of the 1870s were one of the great sporting spectacles of the Gilded Age, drawing enormous crowds and national press attention, and the British-American rivalry was particularly intense. A significant and very frameable piece of American sporting history.
π― FULL PAGE β "CREEDMOOR β BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF THE GROUND"
A full-page bird's-eye view of the Creedmoor rifle range on Long Island β the sprawling layout of shooting stations, spectators, and facilities captured in a comprehensive overhead view. A fascinating document of one of America's first purpose-built competitive shooting facilities.

βοΈ THE SUPPLEMENT β RUSSO-TURKISH WAR
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
π₯ DOUBLE-PAGE β "THE BATTLE OF PLEVNA"
The spectacular supplement showpiece β a massive double-page illustration of the Battle of Plevna in full violent fury: soldiers in desperate close combat across both pages, bayonets clashing, figures falling, cannon smoke billowing through the composition, horses and men in sweeping, energetic struggle. The three Russian and Romanian assaults on Plevna in the summer of 1877 β each repulsed with heavy losses by Osman Pasha's defenders β were the defining battles of the Russo-Turkish War, and this sweeping double-page captures the violence and chaos of those encounters in a composition of extraordinary energy. A spectacular and very frameable piece of Russo-Turkish War military illustration.
π₯ MULTI-PANEL PAGE β "WAR SKETCHES β WITH THE TURKS β THE ARMY OF OSMAN PASHA" β BY W.A. SIMPSON
A richly detailed multi-panel supplement page by war artist W.A. Simpson documenting life in Osman Pasha's army β panels showing Turkish soldiers in formation, a gun crew loading artillery at Sistova, a mounted officer giving the order to march, soldiers of the Danube garrison, and additional military scenes. A vivid human documentary of the Ottoman forces defending Plevna, drawn from life by a war correspondent artist. A significant piece of Victorian war journalism and Ottoman military history.
