The rebel-held Peruvian ironclad Huáscar had been raiding British shipping, prompting the Royal Navy's HMS Shah and HMS Amethyst to intercept her. In the ensuing two-hour engagement, the Shah fired a self-propelled Whitehead torpedo at point-blank range — the first time in naval history a self-propelled torpedo was launched at an enemy warship in combat. The nimble Huáscar simply outran it, and despite being struck dozens of times, her armor held and she escaped with the battle ending inconclusively. The Huáscar would go on to even greater fame two years later as the flagship of Peru's legendary Admiral Miguel Grau during the War of the Pacific, and she survives today as a museum ship in Chile.
