The Versailles fountains — the Latona Fountain, the Apollo Fountain, the Neptune Fountain, and dozens of smaller jets and cascades — had been restored and celebrated throughout the 19th century as symbols of French grandeur. A quarter-page illustration of Pisagua — the northern Chilean port city on the Pacific coast that was the site of a decisive congressional forces landing on February 6, 1891, at the outset of the Chilean Civil War. The civil war of 1891 pitted President José Manuel Balmaceda's government against the Chilean Congress and Navy — a conflict with significant implications for American interests, as both sides competed for U.S. sympathy and the U.S. Navy's presence in Chilean waters created diplomatic incidents. The war would end in August 1891 with Balmaceda's defeat and suicide. A significant piece of South American and Chilean history.
