Combined with a Toledo, Ohio seven-scene spread, California Easter lilies, a Tennessee fox drive, and a New Orleans mass meeting at the Clay statue, this is a primary document of one of the most significant ethnic violence events in American history. THE NEW ORLEANS ITALIAN LYNCHING โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” ๐Ÿ’ฅ FRONT PAGE โ€” "THE KILLING OF ITALIANS IN THE PARISH PRISON IN NEW ORLEANS" A front-page illustration documenting the New Orleans lynching of March 14, 1891 โ€” the largest mass lynching in American history, confirmed by Encyclopaedia Britannica, Wikipedia, the Smithsonian Magazine, and the Zinn Education Project, all of which cite the Harper's Weekly illustration of this event. On the night of March 14, a mob of thousands โ€” including prominent New Orleans citizens, future mayors and governors โ€” broke into the Orleans Parish Prison, where 19 Italian immigrants were being held following their acquittal or mistrial in the murder of Police Chief David Hennessy. The mob shot, mutilated, and in some cases hanged 11 of the men โ€” including fruit peddlers, stevedores, a cobbler, a shipping magnate, and a rice plantation laborer โ€” most of whom had just been found not guilty by a jury. The killings triggered a major international crisis: Italy temporarily severed diplomatic relations with the United States, and the diplomatic fallout contributed to the creation of Columbus Day as a gesture of reconciliation toward Italian Americans. No one was ever prosecuted. The New Orleans lynching of 1891 was the largest mass lynching of Italian Americans in the United States. The New Orleans mayor formally apologized in 2019. This Harper's Weekly illustration is cited by Britannica as primary documentation of the event. A significant and sobering piece of Italian American history, immigration history, and American civil rights history. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ FULL PAGE โ€” "MASS MEETING AT THE CLAY STATUE, NEW ORLEANS" A full-page illustration of the mass meeting at the Clay Statue on Canal Street โ€” where a crowd of 8,000 assembled on New Orleans' Canal Street before marching to the parish prison, whipped into fury by speakers who painted the acquitted Italian defendants as Mafia assassins who had corrupted the jury. This illustration documents the incitement that preceded the killings โ€” a significant and historically charged companion to the prison illustration. โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” ๐Ÿ™๏ธ TOLEDO, OHIO โ€” SEVEN SCENES โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” ๐Ÿ™๏ธ FULL PAGE โ€” "SKETCHES IN TOLEDO, OHIO" โ€” SEVEN SCENES A full-page displayable spread of seven scenes from Toledo, Ohio โ€” a vivid and comprehensive portrait of the growing Lake Erie port city at the height of the Gilded Age.
