The killings triggered a major international crisis: Italy temporarily severed diplomatic relations with the United States, and the diplomatic fallout contributed to the creation of Columbus Day as a gesture of reconciliation toward Italian Americans. No one was ever prosecuted. The New Orleans lynching of 1891 was the largest mass lynching of Italian Americans in the United States. The New Orleans mayor formally apologized in 2019.
