πΌ QUARTER PAGE β "M. TCHAIKOVSKY, THE COMPOSER"
A portrait of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky β published during his triumphant American debut visit, in which he had conducted the inaugural concerts at Carnegie Hall on May 5-9, 1891, just one week before this issue. Tchaikovsky had been personally invited by Andrew Carnegie to conduct at the opening of his magnificent new music hall, and the Russian composer β already famous for Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and the 1812 Overture β was received with enormous enthusiasm by New York audiences. In his diary, Tchaikovsky wrote of being "struck dumb with amazement" by the warmth of his American reception. He returned to Russia and died just two years later in November 1893. This portrait β published one week after his Carnegie Hall appearances β is a primary document of Tchaikovsky's only American visit, capturing one of the great composers of the 19th century at the moment of his greatest personal triumph. A significant piece of music history and Carnegie Hall history.

βοΈ DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD β "BOARD OF BISHOPS OF THE Methodist EPISCOPAL CHURCH" β ALL BISHOPS SHOWN
A double-page centerfold showing the entire Board of Bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church β the governing body of what was then the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, with more than three million members. In 1891 the Methodist Episcopal Church was a major force in American social and political life, having been at the forefront of abolitionism before the Civil War and now leading movements for temperance, women's rights, and social reform. The General Conference of 1891 was a pivotal gathering β it included the first debates over the ordination of women as lay delegates, a controversy that would simmer for decades. A comprehensive group portrait of the leadership of one of America's most influential religious institutions β a significant piece of American Methodist and religious history.

π DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD β "THE TANDEM PARADE, CENTRAL PARK, NEW YORK CITY"
A double-page centerfold of the Tandem Parade in Central Park β the fashionable spring parade of tandem-harnessed carriages (two horses hitched in single file rather than side by side) that was one of the great social events of the Gilded Age New York calendar. The Tandem Parade drew the city's wealthiest families in their finest equipages to the Central Park drives for a spring display of horses, carriages, and fashions. A vivid and very frameable piece of Gilded Age New York social life and Central Park history.
