πΉ FULL PAGE β "THE TOURNAMENT OF ROSES AT PASADENA, CALIFORNIA" β SIX ILLUSTRATIONS
A full page of six illustrations documenting the Tournament of Roses at Pasadena β published in its second year of existence, making this one of the earliest illustrated documentations of what would become the most famous parade and the Rose Bowl game in American history. The Tournament of Roses was founded on January 1, 1890, by members of the Valley Hunt Club, who wanted to showcase Southern California's mild winter climate to visitors from the East β the parade of flower-decorated carriages, games, and festivities was designed to make Easterners suffering through January cold envious of Pasadena's roses in bloom. The Rose Bowl football game would be added in 1902. This Harper's Weekly illustration β published just over a year after the first tournament β is a primary document of one of America's most beloved annual traditions at its very beginning. A significant piece of California history, Pasadena history, and American holiday and parade history.

π FULL FRONT PAGE β "A NEW YORK RABBI" β WITH ARTICLE
A rare and significant full front-page portrait of a New York rabbi β an unusual and notable editorial choice for Harper's Weekly, reflecting the enormous growth of New York's Jewish community in the 1880s-90s as waves of Eastern European Jewish immigrants transformed the Lower East Side into one of the most vibrant communities in the world. A rabbi commanding the full front page of America's most widely circulated illustrated newspaper is a meaningful piece of American Jewish history and the growing visibility of Jewish religious life in Gilded Age New York. A significant and rare piece of Jewish Americana.

ποΈ FULL PAGE β "THE LAST SCENE OF THE LAST ACT OF THE SIOUX WAR"
A full-page illustration documenting the final chapter of the Ghost Dance campaign β the last formal military action of the Indian Wars era that had begun at Wounded Knee on December 29, 1890. Published six weeks after Wounded Knee and two weeks after Lieutenant Casey's killing by Plenty Horses, this "last scene" illustration captures the moment the Army stood down and the Lakota returned to their reservation β a bittersweet and historically charged conclusion to four centuries of conflict between Native Americans and the U.S. government. A significant piece of Native American history and Indian Wars primary documentation.
