The full front page of this issue is a photograph of Colonel Theodore Roosevelt — published nine days after his muster-out from the Rough Riders on September 15, 1898, and just weeks before his election as Governor of New York on November 8. Roosevelt had resigned his post as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in May 1898 to join the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, the Rough Riders — a regiment that included cowboys and gamblers, hunters and prospectors, Buffalo Soldiers, college athletes, and Native Americans from 45 states. He led the charge up San Juan Heights on July 1, 1898, calling it "the great day of my life." The Rough Riders suffered the highest casualty rate of any American unit in the war — more than one-third were killed, wounded, or stricken by disease. Roosevelt returned from Cuba a national hero of unprecedented fame, second in celebrity only to Admiral Dewey himself.
